But…
Sometimes I get upset because there is so much junk food advertised and available EVERYWHERE!!!
Sometimes I feel extreme frustration when I see people serving food that is so blatantly NOT FOOD!!!
Sometimes I want to shout at the top of my lungs, THIS IS NOT FOOD… ITS IS UN-FOOD!!! THIS IS A BUNCH OF NON-FOOD INGREDIENTS WITH SOME STUFF BROKEN DOWN THAT USED TO BE PARTS OF FOOD!!!
Sometimes I feel so sad when I myself eat and serve said “Un-food”
The mother profiled in the NYT shares my feelings and frustrations…. but she is far… more … outspoken … but then again she is a marketer and publicist! Perhaps she is just battle-weary from the endless fight to get people to acknowledge and act on a principle so elementary… something so simple… something we have known for many thousands of years, for crying out loud!!!
We are what we eat!
We have a serious crisis here, people!!! But it’s like smoking back in the day… before we acknowledged what we really knew to be true all along, in spite of the tobacco company rhetoric…
I remember very well (when I was in the early stages of what became a 2 pack-a-day 16 year habit of smoking menthol cigarettes, a woman I worked with said she and her husband do not allow anyone to smoke in their house, and they would not go to anyone’s house who would allow smoking in their home either… I remember thinking, “wow, you must have a very quiet lifestyle”… and I’m sure she did, but the point here is that she simply took action on the information all of us had at the time, which is that SMOKING KILLS, and she governed herself accordingly… smart lady.

I pray for the health of this man.
MeMe Roth is trying to get people to buy into the danger but we simply aren’t yet at the tipping point! People can be charged for smoking in a car with children, they can have their children taken away for putting them in harm’s way, or neglecting them, but these are early days for an idea like this…
“Let’s finally recognize obesity as abuse—abuse of our children, abuse of ourselves—and together take action against it.”
I agree with the WHO’s findings that processed food is the biggest cause of cancer; I believe that sugar is addictive; I totally agree that obesity is viral and contagious; and I believe that we need to do something about this IMMEDIATELY!
Some facts from Natioinal Action Against Obesity…
- Women are at the center of the obesity epidemic. More than 90% of family food-buying decisions are made by women.
- 65% of U.S. adults are overweight or obese.
- A child of overweight parents is 15 times more likely to become overweight.
- Today’s generation of children is the first to be given a lesser life expectancy than their parents. This due to obesity related health complications: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.
I wish MeME every success in continuing to frame this problem so that people can be inspired to change their behaviour in order to become more healthy, and share these values with their loved ones…. but while there is at least $30 Billion in processed food marketing messages, unleashed on us, everywhere, annually, persuading us to move in the opposite direction…

While I see the media value of using inflammatory methods, I prefer to take a more FUN approach to the problem. As someone who has been on the FOX network a lot, she is probably taking a few tricks out of Ann Coulter’s playbook… let’s face it … more often than we would like, fear sells and mean sells
Thankfully, FUN SELLS TOO!!!

- Strawberries Anyone?
Hopefully with some new people in place in FDA and Agriculture, we will see some signs of sanity!
